Who Enid was We take our inspiration from the pioneering work of Enid Lyons, mother of twelve children and the first woman elected to the federal House of Representatives and serve in the federal Cabinet. Enid Lyons opposed abortion and, in her memoirs, recounted her horror at having to watch a nurse throw the remains of her baby into a fireplace after a miscarriage. Enid Lyons was devoted to supporting women and particularly pregnant women. At a rally against a bill to expand abortion she said, ‘Abortion is a matter of life and death. There is no justification for it.’ What we do We invest in education to ensure that all Australians know where their lawmakers stand on protecting the human rights of the unborn and supporting women during and after pregnancy. We provide financial, political and personal support for women seeking to stand for the rights of women and the unborn, and we do this through mentorship, leadership training, campaigning and networking. Enid Lyons List: Provides financial, political and personal support for pro-life women to be well placed as leaders in their community through mentorship and leadership training; Invests in education to ensure that Australians know where their representatives and election candidates stand on abortion issues; Facilitates networking events which empower and equip women to have a voice which protects the human rights of the unborn; Support pregnant women by connecting them with healthcare professionals and service providers who share their passion for their unborn child. Why now? In 2021 the South Australian Parliament passed legislation to allow abortion until birth. Prior to this legislation, abortion was only available after gestational viability to save the life of the mother. Although there was a strong campaign by pro-life groups, this did not stop the passage of the legislation. This has mirrored the passage of abortion to birth bills in every Australian state and territory jurisdiction over the past two decades. We now have wall-to-wall abortion laws across Australia which allow the abortion of a full-term baby. Australia now has the most extreme abortion laws in the world. The pendulum has swung too far and it is time for a proper, evidence-based conversation on our abortion law and its impact. Dame Enid Lyons shattered the glass ceiling in Australia’s federal parliament by becoming the first woman to be elected to the House of Representatives. She served three terms as the member for Darwin from 1943–1951 during which time she also became the first woman to serve in the federal Cabinet.[1] Prior to entering Parliament, she was married to Joe Lyons, Australia’s tenth Prime Minister from 1932 until his death in 1939. After being told she would not be able to have children early in her marriage, Enid went on to have twelve. This number is likely to increase given that the 2021 Act widens access to abortion at all stages of pregnancy. 95.3% of the abortions conducted in South Australia are for the “mental health” of the mother, not because the child or mother has a physical medical issue.[2] Only 4.1% of all abortions in South Australia are for a congenital anomaly.[3] In 2017 only 3 of the 4,349 abortions conducted in South Australia were actually due to a pre-existing psychiatric condition of the mother, yet 4,146 were labelled for “mental health.”[4] Only 29.9% of abortions after 20 week’s gestation in South Australia are due to congenital anomalies.[5] In 2017, 1,581 of the 4,349 terminations were for women who had already previously had an abortion.[6] Of the 111 abortions after 20 week’s gestation conducted in South Australia in 2017, only 3 were due to a medical condition of the mother.[7] 72.9% of all abortions in South Australia are for women between the ages of 20 and 34. In Australia, ‘Emily’s List’ was founded in 1996 and has since supported 284 women into state and federal parliaments across Australia through the Australian Labor Party. Promoting women’s access to abortion is a core value of Emily’s list. The Australian iteration of Emily’s List takes its inspiration from the original Emily’s List, founded in 1985 in the US to fund campaigns of pro-choice Democrat women. The election of Emily’s List women into federal and state parliament has directly led to the proliferation of wall-to-wall abortion-to-birth laws across Australia. Enid Lyons List seeks to create balance by countering the power and influence of Emily’s List in Australia. Enid Lyons is a widely respected figure in Australian history as the first woman elected to federal parliament. She was a pioneer and champion of women’s rights to equal participation in the workplace and of child and maternal wellbeing. Enid Lyons was against abortion, although she was attentive and compassionate to the struggles of women seeking abortion. As an iconic Australian, Enid Lyons is the ideal patron for a uniquely Australian, anti-abortion advocacy campaign. Although Enid Lyons List will have its head office in South Australia, it will promote abortion law reform and education across the nation by supporting the election of more women into Australian parliaments who are opposed to abortion. Fittingly, South Australia was the first Australian jurisdiction to give women the right to vote and to be elected to parliament. Enid Lyons List takes its inspiration from the pioneering women who fought for women’s right to vote against the odds: the media was stacked against them and both political parties were opposed but a grass roots, ten-year campaign ultimately succeeded and laid the foundation for women to fully participate in civic life across Australia. “In South Australia, success was the reward of hard and persistent effort and careful observation of the sign of the times. In the Upper House there were no votes to spare, we won and that was all. The dire results prophesised by opponents of woman’s franchise have not come to pass and you can see in this Convention: real live women who have voted in a Parliamentary election and remain much the same women as before.
